illustration friday: sea

under the sea.

Father had another simple straightforward statement about the ocean, the only valid one I have ever heard. “The ocean,” he said, “doesn’t care.”

This is all you know about the ocean, and all you need to know. Over the seventy-odd years of my life I have seen the wisdom of this statement many times. I have seen powerful swimmers washed ashore dead in an apparently pacific ocean; I have seen infants carried out to sea by a frothing riptide only to be cast back by a succeeding breaker. I have seen a whale crushed by its own weight on a receding tide, and I have seen a strange and wonderful white mare ride a breaker from straight out to sea – we watched her from among other whitecaps on a wind-tossed autumn day, a mile or so offshore, until she breasted the last wave and galloped off down the beach. I knew then and I know now that she came from Tahiti; I’ve seen her in Gauguin’s paintings.

Okay, now I’m hungry. This little green man’s gotta go get a bite to eat. Later d00ds.

* ahem * So I was gone last week. Back to Dallas to visit the family. I’m afraid I was the grandma this Christmastime. Luckily it was an Airzooka instead of a flamethrower, and in my defense it was sheer dumb luck my brother got it in this year’s white elephant, but I don’t think the dog’s gonna be happy in the house for weeks, and it’s a good thing dogs aren’t real capable of extended abstract reasoning or I’d have wound up with poop in my bed. What’d I get? Lottery tickets! $25 worth. Return of five bucks. Got me a cuppa coffee in the airport. Life is good!

Ah, the coronary. Classic!

I wish I were able to get to these sooner, but I’ve been busy on the portfolio portion of my site, which has been down forever, rendering my business cards useless, and the site’s kicking my ass, plus I’m leaving town on Monday, so… well, if you see this, you see it. Wheee. I don’t hate self-promotion, but it’s kind of boring, going me me me all the time, so I’ll be real glad once the portfolio’s finally updated. Then I might get paying work again! That was real nice. Actually, I did one paying job just today, a caricature of somebody. This is something that causes a normally fearless cartoon illustrator to walk with great trepidation. I wish people would commission me to do caricatures of people they hate. That is easy. That is fun. Like, if I could get some rich private school kids to pay me money to draw unflattering pictures of their principal I would be totally down. But this flattering caricature business… man.

I seriously have lost friends before because they asked me to draw pictures of them and I foolishly did. That is no joke. Hence the fear.

I would religiously watch this cartoon if it were on TV. Heck, I’d even buy a television.

I actually really kinda miss my television.

The sea is the graveyard of the Chateau D’If!

I have been reading The Count of Monte Cristo, and I do not have time to spend coming up with clever concepts or anything, but rest assured: this depicts a moment of freedom. In three hours I will be on the first leg of a trip to Sicily. I’m not sleeping tonight. Will doing that help with jet lag? God knows it’s been long enough since I’ve had to deal with that – I don’t remember. We shall see!

But I could not just skip Illustration Friday, you understand.

It took me a while to tease any interesting emotional dynamics out of this one, but then, luckily, I thought of Bugs Bunny cartoons, and spared the world my vision of Shaolin Jesus, if only for today.

good night!

The whole impetus for starting this blog was so that I could participate in Illustration Friday. So. Good night!
